A view over the rooftops from a tree-lined Gipsy Road, Lambeth, with the extensive Crystal Palace building at Sydenham on the horizon. The 'West End and Crystal Palace Railway' sits behind the trees with the edge of Norwood Park beyond. The glass conservatory which formed the Crystal Palace building was originally designed by Joseph Paxton for the Great Exhibition of 1851 which was held in Hyde Park. It was moved and re-erected after the exhibition in Sydenham and surrounded by parkland. By 1854 it was used as a concert hall, a theatre and for exhibitions within the courts. It was destroyed by a fire in 1936.
