Description
Illustration from “Cripplegate Ward” by J.J. Baddeley (1921), showing view of Fore Street in 1860-70, looking west towards St Giles Cripplegate, City of London. The range on the north side of the street, next to number 103, comprises the premises of the London Warehouse Company (wholesale textiles). Just to the right of the more distant horse and carriage is the entrance to Elephant Yard, originally the coaching yard of the Elephant Inn which was demolished in the 1840s. The buildings to the left and in shadow, obscuring the church tower, end at the turning left into Cripplegate Buildings. The buildings beyond this turning, in sunlight, are the Quest House and the ‘four shoppes’, which stood between St Giles Cripplegate and Fore Street until their demolition in 1902.
